Microblog: You Should Run a Halloween Episode

Not a Halloween one-shot mind you. While there's plenty of excellent micro-spooky adventures out there, horror games perfect for that 1-3 session tension or capsule games that prioritize atmosphere and dread, I'm here to say you should run a Halloween episode. A session or two explicitly dedicated to horror themes and atmosphere in an existing campaign otherwise focused on adventure or whatever your system prioritizes. Why? Differences in kind is fun, and allowing your players to explore your world and their characters through new textures can greatly enrich all kinds of table goals! It also takes full advantage of longer running campaigns by allowing for that breadth of experience and matching those vibes to the current in-person season!

Sometimes this is as simple as there being a cute Halloween party, sometimes this as deep as having a persistent slasher-esc pursuer enemy you introduce. Here's d6 ideas to get you going regardless of setting:

1) An adventure hook for a quarantined area. The plague is said to kill people, but in truth it warps their flesh into horrifying abominations. 1-in-10 chance that a player is immune.

2) A thick fog descends upon the player's homebase. When anxieties are high rust coats the walls and blood seeps up from the floors. They each must confront their own demons to excise this self-made curse.

3) A wandering troupe of demented entertainers has come to town. Their ringleader offers an ominous challenge; Survive their gauntlet and he can offer one wish.

4) The 13th Blood Moon rises, a rare cosmological event. All are advised to seek shelter in boarded houses, or in your party's case, a large church. However, the NPCs here harbor their own secrets, and may even be more dangerous than the demonic entities that run wild outside.

5) A grand masquerade is being hosted (players decide what their mask evokes), full of drinks, apples and the display of a fine painting from a far off land. It's said the painting can grant one revelations of reality's true nature (or a kind of madness), they even say a color never seen by human eyes graces its pigments. Are you here to steal it? Destroy it? Bear witness to its beauty?

6) idk curse of strahd or something
